Programmes for children

Story Links

Age 5 to 10 years

I have trained as a facilitator for this programme which is a parent-partnership intervention. Therapeutic storywriting is used to support the emotional wellbeing of the child. This programme runs over 10 weeks and involves the child, their parent and a classroom assistant. Read more about it here.

Storytelling group (Tall Tales)

Age 5 to 9 years

This is a small group intervention for children who lack confidence, they may be anxious, ‘highly sensitive’ or shy. It is aimed at children who may not often get much attention in class but would benefit from a boost to their self-esteem. Through telling stories and creating art work children gain a deeper sense of identity, they develop resilience and gain better coping skills.  Each child creates a unique storybook with their own art work and stories that serves to consolidate feelings of self-worth.

Friendship group

Age 7 to 12 years

School life is stressful for many children because they find friendships difficult and confusing.  Older girls can develop ‘frenemies’  instead of friends which causes deep ongoing stress.  Sometimes children need to be taught friendships skills and to have the experience of being with others in a positive, supported and structured environment.  They may need support in learning to communicate better, recognising how their actions may affect others and what the qualities of a good friend are.

Art journaling (Joyful Journaling)

Age 7 to 15 years

This group utilises the power of simple art techniques to help children feel calmer, more balanced and ready for learning.  Additional mindfulness and relaxation techniques are incorporated to provide a welcome relief from the busyness of the school day.  The group is suitable for children who suffer from anxiety, those who struggle with learning or children who find it difficult to regulate their feelings throughout the school day.  Each child creates a beautiful journal to keep.

SATs and test preparation group
(Study Skills for Superheroes)

Age 9 to 12 years

The pressure of sitting tests often causes high levels of anxiety for children which then has a negative effect on performance during those tests.  During these sessions children learn techniques to help them manage stress both during tests and leading up to tests.  Breathing techniques, mindfulness, stretches and different forms of positive thinking are used to help children remain calm even when tests are challenging.

All programmes are 10 – 12 weeks in total and last for 45 minutes.  There is a therapeutic element to the groupwork but they are not therapy groups.  I can also design programmes to suit the specific needs of a group or work with parents on developing positive parenting skills.  Please contact me for details.
